Inside the Office

MARCH 28, 2019

Here at Salvo we don’t work in a typical office environment. I mean sure we have computers and desks, but we also need some off-leash time. Being chained to your desk can only keep you productive and focused for so long before you turn into the arsonist from Office Space – we don’t want that.

We wanted to create an environment that allowed employees to manage their own time and feel an at-home culture. We also didn’t want people working from home because we would miss them!

So we took to the polls and asked: What do we need here to make your work day even better? How do you like to relax, blow off steam, and get re-energized? We got a lot of input from everyone and we implemented ALL OF IT!

First request: Music. It gets so quiet in here when everyone is focusing. We needed some background noise to keep the energy up. Wish granted – Ashtin set up a company Spotify that anyone here could access to adjust the music choice. People’s dreams of being an office DJ can be fulfilled here now.
We opted for the Sonos play1 speakers – they are wireless, and can sync together to create the perfect sound dynamic for the office. The remote can be a desktop or phone and anyone with the password can log on. They even tune themselves based off the reverberations from the furniture leading to quality music for semi-quality dance moves.

We also wanted a place to relax and do something fun – so we created the lounge. A 55” smart TV complete with Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Wii smash bros. We will certainly use this space for company updates and meetings as well, but most importantly it will be to determine who is better than who at the important games in life like SMASH.

What about something more active? The original intent was ping pong, but we ran into an issue; What if only one employee needed a break? Unless we were going to go Forest Gump status it didn’t sound like a good solution. We opted next for a billiards table, but with such a small office that can be quite the noisy distraction. The final suggestion actually stemmed from an employee trip – Ashtin and the crew were all celebrating a job well done after a trip down to the caymans and got into a very serious darts competition. It’s now thanks to them we have the Dart Alley in the office. We have to especially thank a previous employee Ben for helping us to realize we would need a dart board backer for people who can’t quite hit the board.

To keep people awake and nourished we had a make-shift kitchen. All the standard items like a fridge, water cooler, and a table we used as a shelf made our janky food and coffee storage area. Without a sink we had to dump the extra coffee in the drinking fountain down the hall… So we upgraded!

We now have actual counter tops, a built in sink (complete with water – fancy that), a mini fridge that we keep stocked with a variety of energy drinks, Kombucha, and other beverages, and a coffee bar. Amazing!! I now make daily lattes in the office at no cost to me – mucho appreciado!

Finally, we needed more plants. You can never have too many and here at Salvo we never have enough. #plantswelcome
