Breaking Barriers: Supporting a More Inclusive Gaming Experience with Adaptive Gaming Controller

Focus: adaptive gaming controller for inclusive, accessible play.

At Salvo Software, we build digital tools that serve real users. One of our recent projects involved working with ByoWave to support their development of the Proteus Controller, a modular device designed to make gameplay more accessible and customizable.

This kind of work matters to us. It’s where thoughtful design meets real impact.

Rethinking the Standard Controller

Most controllers follow a fixed layout. For many players, that’s fine. For others, especially those with limited mobility, that rigidity becomes a hindrance.

ByoWave set out to change that with the Proteus Controller. Its modular design allows players to build a setup that matches their playing style. Whether it’s about mobility, comfort, or personal preference, the goal is the same: more control in the hands of the player. To make this vision a reality, the software had to be just as customizable as the hardware.

What We Built: Creating a Setup That Works for Adaptive Gaming Controller Software

We joined the project as specialized development partners, bringing focused expertise across both the firmware layer and the web-based configuration tools. Our goal was to support a system that could reliably interpret a wide range of input configurations and make setup intuitive, whether users were plugging in new modules or mapping buttons in the browser.

What we helped implement:

  • Firmware logic that supports modular input systems, allowing for fully customizable controller layouts.
  • A responsive web app that lets players configure and adjust their setup visually, with real-time feedback.
  • Low-friction setup and responsiveness, so players can plug in and play without delay.
  • Broad adaptability, making it easy to connect and perform across a range of devices and user needs.

Why It Matters

The Proteus Controller is more than a new controller. It reflects a shift in how we think about inclusive technology. Accessibility isn’t an extra feature; it should be designed from the start.

This project reflects what we value at Salvo Software: practical tools, real use cases, and meaningful impact.

See It in Action

The Proteus Controller is available now. Players are already testing configurations, exploring layouts that suit them, and sharing designs with the community.
